Early Bird Classes

The junior senior selective curriculum offers early bird classes, to accommodate the needs of students who would like to have an extra period in their day to add an additional class or would like to have an early release for work purposes.

Usually 2-3 classes are offered during that period of time. These classes have worked well to meet the needs of our students. Students must provide their own transportation with parent permission. The classes run from 6:30 am to 7:20 am. Our regular school day begins at 7:25.

Personal Fitness Plans

Our staff is working to comply with the personal plan state goal. Most of our work has been on a "pilot" basis. Students who have completed assessment plans have demonstrated understanding about their health and fitness which was above our expectations.

All Lake Park students are taking a battery of health assessments. At the completion of the pre and post assessments students will input personal data and print out a personal profile to compare their results. It is the instructor's job between the two assessments to improve the students results through well planned lessons emphasizing cardio fitness, muscular strength and endurance and flexibility.

Presently, sophomores are writing a strength program during their weight training classes. It has been suggested that students also do the same during their aerobic unit at this level.

Juniors and seniors have been asked in many different forms to write a essay or a paper after their assessments were complete. This form will continue to change based on staff input.

Student Class Make-Up Program

Our staff is committed to promoting life-long physical activity, and an attitude towards life-long physical fitness/wellness. Our grading system is set up to help students achieve the habits of physical activity by giving them the opportunity to obtain a perfect participation score for their class grade by making up classes they have missed through absences or not dressing for class.

We provide a cardio make up period in our labs at each campus for 2 hour daily, immediately after school. We have an instructional aide who runs each lab, and student heart rates are monitored. Make-up points are only given to those who achieve their target heart rate.

Teachers promote this program, and students respond well to the opportunity to work-out or to improve their class grades.

Student Leader "Make Fitness Happen" Day

Since we are a two campus district, one of our goals is to engage in activities where students from one campus can work with students from the other campus.

We have initiated a program where our junior-senior student leaders for physical education sponsor a day with our freshman and sophomores to "Make Fitness Happen."

This event, held one time each semester, so that all freshman and all sophomores can experience the leadership of upperclassman, has been very successful. Teachers, students and student leaders have voiced positive comments or learning experiences.

Technology
Computerized Health Assessment/Electronic Portfolios

Our school district has allowed us to accomplish our vision with the purchase of two Tri-Fit computerized health assessment systems, a twenty station high tech Life Lab, a 45 station Cardio-Fitness Center, a three year plan to update the weight room at east campus with twenty new selectorized machines complete with individualized computers to monitor work outs. In addition, the district has purchased 95 heart rate monitors.

At the freshman level, students are assessed both manually and using the Tri-Fit system. Our goal is to teach the components of fitness to freshman as they physically test each component. A twenty page individualized health assessment booklet can be sent home to parents at the completion of testing. All freshman have thus begun their four year profile.

Sophomores are assessed manually on sit-ups, push-ups, 1 mile run, sit and reach, and back extension. At the completion of the assessment, each teacher will provide students with a technology handbook that includes directions about the fitness software to be used.  Students will then use the general computer lab which is networked with the Tri-Fit system, and enter his/her own data before the semester is over. This will complete year two of the health assessment profile.

Juniors and seniors are tested manually also, and will follow a similar procedure to complete their profile. However, a number of classes will be using the system for additional learning which will allow an expanded portfolio at this level. Classes that are developing curriculum in this direction are Personal Wellness: Nutrition and Exercise, Strength Training, Strength and Conditioning, Cross Training Aerobics, Wellness, and science classes.  Some of the software programs used can be accessed from home via the internet at: healthyschools.net

The Tri-Fit system will be networked to all our general computer labs, both east and west campus. Any student will be able to access their portfolio at any time. Staff will be able to access all student health assessments, generate teacher reports, district reports and develop labels and letters to send specific information and reports home to parents.

Technology
Enhanced Fitness/Wellness Strand

In the junior-senior year students have selected diverse course offerings. To deliver consistent information to all students we have adopted the Dr. Chuck Corbin Video Series on health and wellness.

Each instructor is responsible to utilize a series of 10 videos over a two year period. We use this format so that a student studies each health concept complete with worksheet and quiz. If the student changes to a different instructor each semester the student is assured to be working through the series of 10 videos on a consistent basis. Three are used first semester of each year and two are used the second semester.

Technology
Heart Monitor Integration

Freshman and sophomore students are begin taught how to establish and monitor target heart rate through the use of Polar Heart Monitors in our East Campus Life Lab.

In the junior-senior year, it is our goal to teach all the functions of the watch, and practice that function through physical activity. We are able to equip every student in class with a Polar Accurex II monitor and watch. Students are able to monitor whatever function we are working on, record their results and through cognitive testing explain what they have learned.

Juniors and seniors also utilize heart monitor technology each week as they use the Cardio-Fitness Center. Target heart rate is monitored as part of the participation points that students earn while they are working. We have 42 watches that we use in our center, as well as a pulse wand to monitor heart rate.

In the 04-05 school year we added 80 E600 Polar HR monitors which allow us to download one workout per student per semester. We plan to include this information on the students electronic profile. Science classes have also been invited to use any of this technology that is applicable to their curriculum. We look forward to working with them.

All west campus staff are certified in the use of heart rate monitors. All tenured staff (6) attended a two day certification workshop in August >98. Newly hired staff (2) came to us with superior knowledge in use of heart rate technology.

A component of our student leadership program is teaching the use of heart rate monitors. All student leaders graduates are able to assist teachers in helping other students understand the watch, Heartalkers and their usage.
